From the first look of its establishing scene it reminds me of the aerial shot from the West Side Story (1961). But then we could hear the narration of a man as it opens to a room of thousands of desks with people working simultaneously—where the heck is he?, who’s speaking who? Then C.C Baxter is his name portrayed by Jack Lemmon. A man that is vigorous, energetic and is called “Buddy boy” by his bosses because of his generosity and hard working attitude. Actually,  what I find really fascinating is the story itself ; when Baxter introduced to us his nice and cozy apartment that is just perfect for a batchelor like him but the thing is there is a catch, a certain interesting problem—he can’t always get in when he wants to in his own apartment (that is the time when I raised my eyebrows, it is his own apartment after all) IT IS INDEED INTRIGUING

Then one of his company bosses came out from his apartment with a woman and the other one called him in the middle of the night making a deal with him  about his apartment. He wants to borrow his apartment just for 30 minutes because he had a jackpot with a woman that looks exactly like Marilyn Monroe. Well, with that borrowing-apartment strategy it made him welcome his promotion. It is certainly an opportunity-wise but it is tragic for him!

The apartment itself was pretty exciting but when you add the complicated relationships, the comedy, thrilling and bitter feelings that is presented in the story it becomes more appealing just like a great film looks and feels like.

I admired the characters itself—how they felt so real and true. Like the character of  Shirley Maclaine, Fran Kubelik—an elevator girl at the same building Baxter works at.  She is perfect with that short hair as she looks more fierce than ever but then when love started to consumed her and break her her long hair attitude of a woman opens and reveals her sadness that made her swallowed those sleeping pills. I know, it is a common thing to do but it doesn’t look like common rather it becomes more challenging and difficult for Baxter—because she loves the woman, that woman who has an affair with his boss, Mr. Sheldrake who offers him a promotion and whom he lends his apartment (That is just awful). I really adore how Baxter (the character) reacts to the situation. He is genuinely hurt but still unaffected and unselfish when he saw Fran lying on his bed, unconscious. It is unrequited love for him, at first.

Then the next plot came, (engaging part, lots of funny scenes!) when Fran spent two days with Baxter. They slowly created a wonderful relationship. There’s a funny part when she discovers the alluring gig that is often occuring at his apartment but she just reacted genuinely about it, like it’s such a usual thing—that is a real character! Then, he tells the story when he himself tried to commit suicide with the use of a gun but instead he accidentally shot himself on the knee! That is really funny! Then everything between them becomes really warm, they were playing cards and I think they both feel a love that’s started to grow inside them. It is really bitter-sweet!

I had made the right decision to watch this film, the way it was created it is indeed a story-wise, acting-wise and just movie-wise

Basically, the direction of this film was authentic, precise and striking. The looks of Black and White justifies the celebration of bitterness in love and in life. It doesn’t look exhausting or foggy; rather, it appears to be attractive and intriguing. The cinematography is on point and mostly with the intelligent use of Wide, Medium and Close-up shots whereas there’s this scene when Baxter left the phone open for Fran (because Mr. Sheldrake was on the line waiting for her) this is one of my favorite shots in the film, it makes use of wide shot when Fran slowly walked towards the phone with an intense look in her face then she stops in front and we can see closely the phone waiting and her hands hesitating or maybe with excitement then we follow a panning shot turning upwards as she grabs the phone and says “Hello Jeff”, it simultaneously changed the mood of the character and also the scene. She looks rather sad, warm and with guilt.

Another thing, the genius editing at the end scene where Fran ran upstairs to see Baxter in New Year’s Eve then suddenly she heard a loud “bang” it was devastatingly incredible, the exact reaction of Maclaine and the sound is perfect. It was intense and romantic. The funny thing about it is that it is not a gunshot that she heard but a bottle of champagne that was popped, it’s New Year’s Eve after all! Everything is loud and celebrating, but the interesting part is that that sound terrifies her because perhaps she remembers the story that Baxter told her (the suicide that turns out to be an accidental knee shooting) and when he opens the door and he’s alive with the dripping champagne on his hand she finally can breathe, still she asked him if his knee was alright thinking maybe he (by any chance) shoots his knee again—Oh it’s undoubtedly hilarious! I love it! It’s just brilliant comedy. I remember watching a scene like this from the film The Artist (2011). It was a great kind of misleading.

I was mesmerized by the last part when they continue playing cards it was really funny and romantic. When Baxter just being himself saying he loves her and adores her then Fran is also being herself responding with a striking line “Shut up and deal” with a smile on her face and with a real amusement in his eyes. CHARMING!

Well, I consider this film one of my favorites next to Gone with the Wind. It has its own magic and—

I should tell you, it is a masterpiece and it achieved a modern musical film. It reminds me of “Singing in the rain” but it is more realistic and definitely breathtaking picture.
The camera works is very magical, flexible, perfect for the story, I admire how despicable it is but is unique, intelligent and emotional–uses the beauty of long takes.
The cuts were musically inspired, every beat of the music transpires simultaneously. The classic transitions was applied marvelously.

The choreography of both music and dance is magnificent! It is in fact dreamy, gorgeous and definitely soaring.
Well, I love how the lines were strikingly beautiful as well as the acting performances. I noticed the chemistry of the two, they are their own roles. Emma Stone who got me laughing and crying at the same time, Ryan Gosling who is completely handsome and composed just exactly his character. How genuine their acting performance is. The best part is when they argue during their dinner and I could say that that scene is legit. You know when the argument is real if both person couldn’t even look at each other’s eyes. Well, they’ve done that pretty successful maybe you’ve noticed it too how they’re trying to avoid each other’s gazes. When the situation of both parties were at fault that means they are sad and ashamed of what brought them to be in that complicated relationship. They love each other though, that’s why they are afraid to hurt each other but by not realizing it they already hurting each other. It is already shown from their own eyes.
The production design is successful and perfect — every hard work is exquisite. Considering the colors and the touch of the 80’s conspires with the passionate hearts of both of the protagonist. Sebastian who loves jazz music, who dreamt to have his own jazz club to save jazz music from dying. Mia, she admires the 50’s actress Ingrid Bergman. I love how Damien Chazelle created unique characters with the passion for the classics.

The plot is smoothly written, it is romantic and really inspiring. (I can’t composed any good words for the structure of this film, but 100% inspiring.)

  • The whole film inspired people to do the things that they love to do, to pursue the dreams despite of plenty of obstacles on the way. You’re a fool to continue that dream but in this story, all will become possible at the right moment.

The thing is you need to keep going even if it’s tiring and depressing sometimes, always remember that you will get there soon. You have your own time.

Carol (2015) 10/10

*HIGHLY RECOMMENDEDcarol4This is my favorite film of 2016. If you can glance on my film diary, well it’s full of Carol on it. I watched it plenty of times already!

I must say it is a lesbian film that feels good in a right way when you watched it, despite of the said social and political issues inside the film. However, it was rectified by Dir. Todd Haynes that this is made for aesthetics and romance it is better to leave political issues outside the line. Audience have their own principle of thinking so it is best just to let it be their own interpretations even if it is concerning with political or social issues.

It is a romance, rather a wonderful, beautiful love between a two women whom welcomed by love at first sight. The adoration all started when their eyes met in just a second and everything just fall into place. I admire the writing of Patricia Highsmith, the plot was subtle and perfectly intense in some point;  and to the wonderful screenplay by Phyllis Nagy the whole experience was extremely remarkable. We sympathizes with the two protagonists whose love is dependent to what society thinks and that is their love is immoral, because Haynes brought us to his 50’s world with lesbian romance that you wouldn’t imagine to witness because of it’s exquisite visual literacy.  AND in the 50’s homosexuality is a disease that is needed to be cured.

If you have watched Brief Encounter (1946), you might have noticed some similarities between the two especially their plot structure and also the immoral love that both of the protagonist acquired. I also recommend it, it is tragic for a love affair –lol.

Many had spoken that this is the first lesbian film that obtain a happy ending, as they proclaim it. Yes, I absolutely agree on that on the other hand, in my opinion the reason why they proposed this kind of notion is because they exposed an open ending. There are several ideas that pursue that Carol is definitely a happy ending for a lesbian film because there’s this feeling that you foresee that there is still hope for love—there is always a second chance.

Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara was incredibly phenomenal. They have this perfect chemistry which made the film romantic without trying hard. While watching the film, I never feel like looking in a lesbian film but instead I just witnessed how two people falls in love in an instant. They deserved every award and recognitions they received.

I truly believed that this film was heartbreaking and subtle at the same time. I adore how Haynes organized every scenes very carefully; especially when he used the tricky structure of Brief Encounter whereas the first and last scene of the film was indeed similar but with different intentions.

He let the audience to feel innocent in the first scene at the Ritz Hotel but when we finally came to the last part we ought to feel a different emotion as we already catched what is already happening and what is just happened between them, it becomes more intense and dramatic compared to the first time it is shown. Specifically, when Carol stated “I love you” you can feel how genuine and sad it was.

I also noticed how the film evolves from the point of view of Therese into Carol. The first scenes focus on the qualities of Carol and how Therese’s adoration with her developed so it is Therese’s point of view presented on the first several plots. And then it changes to Carol’s point of view, when the plot focuses on how Carol’s life has changed when she left Therese and how she took the first move to see Therese and hoping for a second chance with her. But Therese doesn’t want to take another risk with her since Carol had broken her heart for the first time. However, love will always find it ways to connect you to the one you truly love and who genuinely loves you.

Final thoughts, I did not see this film as a lesbian film because of its strong universality.



Arrival (2016) 10/10

The film was surreal I can’t even discern fiction and reality from this piece (the thought of the possibilities in the film, it seems real like it could happen in the future) it is in fact mind blowing and it is without a doubt breathtaking.

The cliche concept of “alien invasion” is completely changed into a more positive attack to begin with, it is not your another average alien movie— everything is new.

I adore how it delicately unfold every details as if you were solving the puzzle with Amy. Different emotions was successfully linked with it’s intense transition of scenes, I admire that kind of edit as its cuts elicit various kind of emotions. Also, the cinematography intensify every plot as well as the music, it is heavy and dark but mostly it uses ambient noise which makes it more realistic, dramatic and thrilling.
One of the good thing about this film is how it converts people into thinking on focusing on Aliens first like how it would do to humanity but the film turns out to have a very substantial message about humanity. How will you compensate for the building up of our humanity.
Well, I can say that it is less complicated compared to Interstellar it is more vague in terms of the concept of “time”.
Speaking of great performance, Amy is brilliant just like the film per se she is raw and natural. This is her film, she polished everything including the intelligence and empathy of her character.
I think the director solved his films by dealing with common themes and turning it into incredible piece of art.


Maybe in the future, we don’t know.

Blue Jasmine (2013) 10/10

I admired the process of Woody Allen how he widely welcome the heavy reality all the way of his films and finally deals with the tragic ending. It’s all about the real deal! When it comes in the performance, Cate Blanchett shows her versatility and it is impossible not to feel for her character.

If you ask me I think it is identical to Streetcar named Desire (1951), also deals with social issues. (I have a review for that)

Well, I think the film has a touch of self-awareness which creates empathy with the audience. It is possible to sympathize with her or maybe you might think she deserves all that misfortune, well you’ll feel it if you watch it.

But I am 100% in awe w/ this film!
